Finding Time For What You Love

As a young creative it can be such a headache trying to juggle your interests/creative outlet along with your other responsibilities such as chores, sports, school work, etc. All of which are good things but a lot of times we don’t know how to squeeze everything in, leading to feeling overwhelmed and eventually getting burnt out and giving up on your creative outlet all together. But in this blog post, I want to help you figure out how you can still find time for what you love and not feel overwhelmed by your schedule.

1. PRIORITIZE what is most important to you and cut out extras

Where your time is- there your treasure is… Is that how it goes? If not, that is how it should go. Zoom out on your day- maybe even grab out a piece of paper and use it to track your time over the next couple days. Then you can really see what it is you prioritze in your life. If you have a project that needs attention, then your favorite tv show might have to wait. Now don’t get me wrong- a breather and a break will do your creative mind a lot of good. But let it be just that- a breather, not a consumer of your time- a short break, not an excuse to set your project to the side for too long. If you want to get serious about your time- I have attached a printable time tracker for you to use and help you to evaluate your day and the way that you are using your time. You can grab it below!

2. SET GOALS for yourself

While tracking and evaluating your time will be helpful, it won’t give you clear direction in how to better use your time. This is where setting goals for yourself comes in. Whether it is a daily goal of 20 minutes of working on your project, or a specific goal for the day- planning out goals and writing them down is a crucial way to succeed in accomplishing and finishing your art projects. Give it a try!

3. DON’T OVERBOOK yourself

Give yourself time! Don’t load your schedule. If your art is important to you, make time for it. Consider writing out a list of things you have committed to and prioritze them. You may have to look at this list and cross out a few things that you just can’t commit to right now. If you want to take your art serious, it requires time. When we spread ourselves too thin, we can end up doing many things OK- but nothing GREAT. If you want your art to be GREAT, you have to make time and keep yourself from over committing to too many extras. You’d be surprised how much time you can gain by cutting out texting friends for the day, or by closing down your social media page- even simply not posting during certain times during the day.. Are sports consuming your time, maybe a hard look at your schedule is needed.

Lastly,  pray that God would help you step back and take an honest look at where you are placing your time. His word should always be first and the gift He has given us should not the take back seat. He will be faithful to help you prioritze your time!
